The agency manages 1,000 full-time researchers, the main part of whom are permanently settled in Tropical areas).

(epidemiology of Leishmaniasis, Population genetics of sandfies).
- 1980-1984: a 5-year stay at the Instituto Boliviano de Biologia de Altura, La Paz, Bolivia). Epidemiology of Chagas'disease, molecular epidemiology of Triatoma infestans and Trypanosoma cruzi.
- January 1985- July 1986: Dept Genetics, UC Davis , USA (Professor F.J. Ayala).
- July 1991- August 1992: Dept Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, UC Irvine , USA (Professor F.J. Ayala).

Organization of scientific meetings:
Organization at the CDC of a monthly seminar on molecular epidemiology, and of the international workshop: “Molecular epidemiology and evolutionary genetics of infectious diseases” (MEEGID), under the auspices of CDC, IRD and CNRS (CDC, Atlanta, June 1996). The second session of the workshop was held in May 1997 in Montpellier ( France ), again under the auspices of CDC, IRD and CNRS. The 3rd session was held at Rio de Janeiro in June 1998. 4th session was held in Dakar Senegal, 21-24 June 1999. 5 th session was held in Hyderabad , India , 12-16 November 2000. 6th session was held at the Institut Pasteur de Paris, France , 23-27 July 2002. 7th session was held in Valencia ( Spain ) 19-23 July 2004, in the framework of the 89h European Multicolloquium of Parasitology (EMOP IX). 8th session to be held at Mahidol university, Bangkok, Thailand, November/December 2006.
